I’ll walk you through each step, complete with a pictures and a free printable beading pattern. I’ve been making these things since I had a business selling them in the 5th grade, so you’re in good hands. Let’s go!

How to Make a Pony Bead Dog

Materials

  • Pony bead dog printable pattern
  • 46 body color pony beads
  • 11 face and body color pony beads
  • 4 collar color pony beads
  • 1 tag color pony bead
  • 3 eye and nose color pony beads
  • about 4 feet of ribbon, yarn, or string
  • scissors
  • keyring (optional)

Step-by-Step Tutorial with Pictures

Start by threading 5 body color pony beads onto your string. Push them to the middle of the string.
Next, thread 4 more body color beads onto just one side of the string. Push them right up against the first 5.
Thread the string back through the three beads closest to the center bead.em to the middle of the string.
Pull the loop tight to make the first ear. You may need to push and pull the beads a bit to get the tension right. Repeat this on the other side to make the second ear.
For every other row after this, you will thread the beads for that row onto one side of the string.
Take the other side of the string and thread it through the opposite direction. You can imagine that the string would be making an X inside the beads.
Pull both strings in opposite directions until the new row of beads sits snugly under the row before.
Repeat this using the colors in the printable pattern to make the dog’s body.
For the tail, thread 7 beads onto just one string. Push them up near the body.
Take the string and tie it to the string between rows 5 and six. Tie the other string between rows 8 and 9 to finish the dog up!

Optional Keychain start

If you want to include a keychain you can add it when you make the ears in the first step.

Start by threading the 5 body color pony beads onto your string and push them to the middle.

Tie a keychain on either the left or right side right after the last bead on that side.

Then, follow the directions to make the ears. The keychain will sit on the side of the dog’s head!

  1. “2 feet is definitely not enough string” Is what I said before I started “what ev I’ll give it a try” I made some of it and there was not even enough string to make the rest of the 50% of dog left I was such a cool design too I love making bead art for myself but alas it was tragic

  2. I love the dog design! I had to use approx 3 1/2 feet of string to complete the project comfortably. Thanks
