Tips and Tricks
- This reindeer works best when printed on white cardstock. The strength of the cardstock keeps it from falling over so that you get that nice rocking motion. White printer paper tends to be too weak!
- When gluing the head, make sure that it is closer to the middle than to the left side. I line the side of the head up with the left side of the reindeer’s body. This helps balance the rocker. If you put the head too close to the left side, your rocker tends to fall over that way.
- When adding the legs, make sure that they are angled outwards, like the reindeer is flying across the sky. If you angle them down too far, they stop the motion of the rocker.
- If you want to add anything add it to the middle. If you add things to the head, like ,googly eyes, pom poms for the reindeer’s nose, or pipe cleaners for the reindeer’s antlers, it will make one side of the rocker too heavy and you’ll lose that fun motion.
Learning Connections
Connect this craft with literature, writing, movies, or even music!
- Literature: This craft goes great with How to Catch a Reindeer, The Night Before Christmas, or Dasher. Read the book with the students, then make this simple reindeer craft afterward!
- Writing: Give students a creative writing assignment, like writing about Christmas from a reindeer’s point of view, or telling the story of how their reindeer came to pull Santa’s sleigh.
- Movies: This pairs well with the classic Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. For a different take, try Annabelle’s Wish about a calf who wants desperately to be a reindeer!
- Music: Kids love to sing Rudolph, but there’s also the Reindeer Pokey, 10 Little Reindeer, and good old Jack Hartmann with his Rockin’ Reindeer Dance: the perfect match for this adorable reindeer craft!
