Halloween is coming quick, and I’m calling it now: HUNTR/X are going to be the it costumes this year! If you’re looking to DIY a costume for yourself or your little one, you’ve made it to the right place.
I made my daughter a Rumi wig using a crochet beanie, a ton of yarn, and some hot glue. She has been running around the house in it for the last week so I can verify: it stays put, looks great, and so far has held up through a trampoline dance concert, a visit to a friend’s house, and a ton of cartwheels.
How to Make a Rumi Wig
Before You Begin
There are actually 2 variations in the instructions: a simple version that only has a braid attached to the beanie, and a version with a French twist around the edge of the beanie. The French twist is significantly harder and takes longer, but I love the finished look it gives. It’s the version in the pictures.
The braid-only version looks more like this. It’s still super cute, so pick the level of commitment you want and follow the notes for that version!
Materials
- Appropriately sized crochet beanie in Caron Simply Soft yarn (I used this pattern in 6-10 year old size)
- 1 skein Caron Simply Soft in color that matches beanie
- Scissors
- H (or similar size) crochet hook (only used for French twist)
- Foam head (optional, but very helpful!)
- Hot Glue Gun
Yarn Note
This wig was created using Caron Simply Soft (CSS) in Iris. CSS Grape and CSS Orchid are also great color choices. If you can’t find CSS, YarnSub.com suggests either Yarn Bee Soft and Sleek in Purple or Purple Haze, or Bernat Premium in Lilac or Grand Purple.

Measure and Cut

First, cut your yarn into 100 inch lengths. I wind mine around the legs of the kitchen table, which are almost exactly 50 inches apart. After I’ve wound the whole skein, I tie a piece of yarn around the center of one side and cut the side opposite so that the tie is now in the middle of a bundle of yarn.
Optional French Twist Instructions: Set aside about 1/3 of the yarn. This will be used to make the optional French twist. The other 2/3 will be used to make the braid.
Braid
Start by splitting another 1/3 off of the braid yarn so that you have a smaller and a larger bundle.
Stretch the larger bundle out on the floor. Take the smaller bundle and fold it over the center of the larger bundle. This is going to be the middle section of your braid, and the two ends of the larger bundle will form the other two sections of the braid.

Make Rumi’s braid by braiding these three sections. If you are skipping the French twist, then you can simply braid until you reach the end of your yarn and skip to the gluing step. If you’re doing the French twist, only braid until the braid will reach the nape of the beanie. Tie off your braid with a piece of yarn.

Tip: To make the braid neater, twist each section towards the center as you braid. This keeps the yarn tighter and smoother.
Glueing the Braid
Use hot glue to glue your braid from the top of the beanie to the nape of the beanie. It helps to place the beanie on the foam head for this. The head can give you a better idea of how the braid will hang.
Glue in small sections, pressing down each time to ensure that the braid sticks.

If you’re skipping the French twist, then you can trim the end of the braid to be even, and you’re done! If not, continue onward!
French Twist
Set the braid aside. Grab two strands from the yarn you set aside at the very beginning. We’re going to add them to the edge of the beanie.
Insert your crochet hook downward through the stitch at the edge of the beanie and use it to pull the center of the yarn through.

Pull the ends through the loop and then pull the knot tight against the beanie. This is your first yarn bundle.

You are going to make a bundle in each of the eight stiches in the center of the beanie. From there, you will only make a bundle every other stitch all the way around.

To create the French twist, go back to those eight bundles in the center. I recommend watching the video, but I’ll also put some written instructions after the video for those who prefer reading!
Grab one from the center and pull it up and to the back of the beanie. Cross the bundle next to it over and drop the first bundle. Pick the first bundle back up along with the third bundle and cross both of those over the second bundle. Continue this pattern, picking up the next bundle and twisting each section until you reach the middle of the back of the beanie. Tie off this side.
Do the exact same thing, but to the other side to create the other half of the French twist. Once you have both sections twisted, check to see if you can remove the beanie from the foam head easily. If you can’t, your twist is too tight. If you can, you’re ready to move on.
Braiding in the Twist
At the back of your beanie, you should have three sections, a twist section from the right, a twist section from the left, and the braid coming down the center. I recommend watching the video to see how to braid them down. There’s written instructions afterwards too!
Use these three sections to continue the braid down the back of the beanie. Braid the yarn to the length you want it, then tie it off with a piece of yarn. Trim the ends evenly.

For extra security, you can hot glue the twist to the beanie so that it doesn’t roll down.

And that’s it! Place that Rumi wig on your HUNTR/X wannabe and you’re ready for the Halloween party, pretend dress up play, or just the next kitchen concert!
