Mug Cakes in a Jar
Mug cakes are all the rage. They’re quick, satisfy your sweet tooth, and don’t burden you with a full cake calling your name in the kitchen.
Baby food jars are just the right size for gifting someone a single serving of deliciousness. It’s a match made in heaven 🙂
I painted the lids to make these look cute, but you could use a cupcake wrapper or piece of fabric to cover the Gerber advertisement on top. Layering ingredients also looks great, but is a bit more work, and these look just fine if you mix everything together and send them out that way.
Below are the recipes for the three cake mixes shown, chocolate (adapted from Table for Two, green lid), cinnamon (red lid), and chocolate chip (adapted from Kirbie’s Cravings, yellow lid). There are also printable tags with preparation instructions so the lucky recipient knows what to do.
Chocolate Mug Cake Mix
Ingredients
- ¼ cup flour
- 2 Tbsp cocoa powder
- 2 Tbsp sugar
- â…› tsp salt
Instructions
- Layer ingredients using the order above.
- To prepare: Add 2 Tbsp oil and 5 Tbsp milk to mix. Mix well and microwave for 70 seconds.
Cinnamon Mug Cake Mix
Ingredients
- 6 Tbsp flour
- 2 Tbsp brown sugar
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- ¼ tablespoon baking powder
Instructions
- I prefer not to layer this one, since you have to put two servings in to fill up the jar. Instead, I mix everything together, then pour it in.
- To prepare: For each serving, add 1 Tbsp oil and 2 Tbsp milk to mix. Mix well and microwave for 70 seconds.
Chocolate Chip Mug Cake
Ingredients
- ¼ cup flour
- 1 tbsp brown sugar
- ¼ tsp baking powder
- 2 tbsp chocolate chips
Instructions
- Layering tip: Make one layer of flour and baking powder. Make second layer of brown sugar, and fill remaining space with chocolate chips.
- To prepare: Dump mix into mug. Add 3 tbsp milk and 1/2 tbsp oil to the mix and stir well. Microwave for 70 seconds. Enjoy!

Hi:
Your recipe calls for 3 tbsps. milk and 1/2 tbsp. oil added to the mix, however on the tag it is 2 tbsp. milk and 1 tbsp. of oil. Why is it different. Thanks much!
Oh my goodness! Thank you for catching that. The recipe is correct and the tags are wrong. I’ve updated the tags to reflect the true recipe. I really appreciate you bringing that to my attention, and I’m sorry for the confusion!
Thank you for your quick response!
oops, forgot to mention it was the chocolate chip mug cake and how long can we store it in the jars?
You should be able to store them in an airtight container for up to a year.
What size jars are used…. 4oz, 6 oz?
They’re 4 oz 🙂
Probably a silly question but, on the Cinnamon Cake recipe, you say the 4 oz. jar holds two servings – are the recipe measurements for 1 serving or 2? (Basically, is 3Tbsp of flour the amount you’d need for one serving, or the amount that makes 2 servings…if that makes sense?)
The recipe is for 1 serving, and I just put two of them in a jar. So 3 Tbsp is for one serving. I can totally see where that’s confusing!
Excellent. That’s what I assumed, but it was very late last night when I was trying to figure it out and, well, it was easier just to ask. Ha. Thank you!
Just made the cinnamon mix. It’s way too much to fit in the tiny jar. 12 TBSP of brown sugar is right?
No, the correct measurement is 2 Tbsp. The recipe reflects this now. I’m sorry for the confusion!
Hahahahaha! That makes much more sense! You should see what the cooked result looked like! 😂🤣
I bet it was pretty sweet 🙂
These recipes look terrific! The only problem is that the Chocolate Mug Cake recipe calls for 5 tbsp milk and 2 tbsp oil, but the tag calls for 4 tbsp milk.
Thank you for pointing that out! The correct measure is 5 Tbsps. I’ll fix the tags so they’re correct!
What type of flour do you use? I’m from the UK, will I use plain flour or self raising flour. Thanks
I use plain all-purpose flour 🙂
Silly question… The recipe says to put the contents into a large mug. What size mug would be the minimum? 10 oz? These look like the perfect stocking stuffers I’ve been searching for! Thanks so much!
10 oz sounds about right!
Is the 1/8 of a tablespoon of salt on the chocolate correct or should it be 1/8 of a teaspoon? Same for the cinnamon, should it be 1/4 tablespoon of baking powder? That just seems like a lot
thank you for sharing these cute little mug cakes in a jar. I have cookies in a jar and they’re a hit as well. Again thank you.
Thanks for stopping by!
