Apple Pie Scented Playdough
Squishy, taste-safe apple pie scented playdough is perfect for fall creations. Easy to make, and keeps for up to two weeks!
In honor of the season, I’ve given my homemade playdough recipe a fall twist. This playdough smells like, well, a baked apple pie with its combo of cinnamon, cloves, and ginger. It’s also taste safe, which means that it tastes terrible, but it won’t do your kiddo any harm.
Apple pie scented playdough is a cooked dough, so this may be one for younger kids to watch you make. It will keep for up to two weeks in an airtight container. At least it does here in dry Utah. If you live in a more humid environment, your mileage may vary.
What do I need for apple pie scented playdough?
Flour – I use all purpose flour for this recipe, which means that this is not gluten free. If you’re looking for a gluten free recipe, I recommend this one.
Water – Literally just the stuff from the tap!
Salt – You need regular, iodized salt for this. Any of the course grain salts will not work as they won’t cook in well.
Vegetable Oil – Vegetable and canola oil work, but olive oil and coconut oil make a sticky mixture. I’ve never tried any others.
Cream of Tartar – This helps with the congealing. You can make the dough without, but it will be slightly sticker. You may need to knead in a bit more four to combat that.
Apple Pie Spice – If you don’t have any specific apple pie spice, this blend is the one I use. It smells amazing and mixes in perfectly!
Food Coloring – This is completely optional. If you choose not to use it, your dough will come out the color of the “pie crust” in the photos.
In order to avoid staining, I use these Natural Liquid Food Colors*. They come in all the colors of the rainbow, are skin and taste safe, and do not stain clothes or skin. The only downside is that they cost a bit more and are harder to get ahold of.
Getting a bright, vibrant red can be really difficult. I actually recommend starting with a nice bright pink, then adding a little red to shift the color. Red alone tends to come out dull and lifeless, but the pink base brightens things up and gives it that gorgeous apple red!

How do you get the dough to be an actual pie crust color? Thanks so much!
That’s the color it comes out as just naturally. You could also add a few drops of brown food coloring if you’d like a deeper color!
Awesome, thanks!!!
