If you’ve never had Oreo truffle balls, then you’re in for a (not so spooky) surprise — they practically melt in your mouth and have a decadent, rich chocolate flavor. That alone is reason enough to make them!
Ingredients
If you’ve never learned the secret of Oreo truffle balls, then let me know show you how just a few simple ingredients can make decadent Halloween chocolate truffles!
- Oreos: For this recipe, you’ll want a package of Oreos or other similar sandwich cookies. I used regular Oreo cookies, but you can also make this recipe with golden Oreos.
- Cream Cheese: You’ll need one 8 oz block of cream cheese. This works best if your cream cheese is softened, so make sure to take it out of the fridge 20 or so minutes before you start.
- Chocolate Chips: These are used to cover the outside of your truffles. You can use any type of chocolate you’d like — dark chocolate chips, milk chocolate chips, and semi-sweet chocolate chips all work here. You can even use white chocolate chips for a completely different aesthetic!
- White Chocolate Melts: I like how easy white chocolate candy melts are to use, but you can get the same effect with white chocolate chips or even almond bark.
- Spider Sprinkles: I used this sprinkle mix from Wilton*, and the spiders and creepy crawlies were just the right size!
Instructions
Step 1 | Crush Oreos
We want our Oreos crushed as finely as possible. I use my blender to do this, but you could also use a food processor, or a ziploc bag and a rolling pin. Any of these methods work, but the major point is to make sure that you don’t have any large Oreo pieces left — you want fine crumbs!
Step 2 | Form the Centers
Once you’ve got your Oreos adequately crushed, pour them into a large mixing bowl. Add the softened cream cheese, and then use either an electric mixer or a lot of elbow grease to mix the ingredients. The final product should look and feel like chocolate playdough.
Once you’ve got your center dough, roll it into approximately 1″ balls and place them on a wax paper covered baking sheet.
Step 3 | Cover in Chocolate
In a microwave-safe bowl, melt your chocolate chips. The easiest way for me to do this is to microwave the chips in 30 second bursts, stirring in between. You can also use a double boiler to melt your chocolate chips, you fancy person.
Once your chips are melted, you’re going to roll the centers in the melted chocolate. I use two forks to roll the balls around, then lift them up and place them back on the wax paper. You get less excess chocolate pooling at the bottom when you use forks as opposed to spoons.
Once your truffles are sufficiently enrobed in chocolate (did you know that’s the technical term for covering something in chocolate. There’s literally a machine called an “enrober!”), you can let them harden. On the countertop, it will take several hours. You can place your homemade truffles in the fridge to speed the process up.
Step 4 | Decorate
When your truffles are hardened, place the white chocolate melts, white chocolate chips, or almond bark in a large bowl, then melt them. Drizzle the melted white chocolate over your Halloween Oreo balls. This can be very messy. Think about spiderwebs. They’re not neat, are they?
I work in batches for this, because you have to press the spider sprinkles on before the melted white chocolate hardens. I tend to do about 5, then pause and place spiders, then go on to the next truffle.
Step 5 | Enjoy!
Let the spiderwebs harden, and your truffles are ready to eat. These do not have to be served immediately, but you should refrigerate them if you’re not going to use them within the next couple of hours. The cream cheese should not be left at room temperature for more than about 2 hours.
Decorating Ideas
You are not limited to simply spider webs — here are few decoration ideas that are just as simple!
- Ghost Truffles: Use white chocolate to cover your truffles. When they harden, add a couple of dots of frosting for eyes and a mouth!
- Mummy Truffles: Again, use white chocolate to cover your truffles. While they’re still soft, add some candy eyeballs. Once they harden, drizzle more white chocolate over the tops, criss-crossing it mummy-style!
- Bat Truffles: While your truffles are still soft, cut an Oreo cookie in half. Press each side into the sides of the truffles to make bat wings, then add some candy eyes.
- Multicolored Halloween Truffles: Cover your truffles with melted orange candy melts, green candy melts, purple candy melts, etc to make a multicolored Halloween feast. Alternately, you could use golden Oreos to make the centers, then dye them different colors to make Halloween surprises!
