Crocheted Winter Headband
At the Alaska State Fair this year, I noticed how popular Alaska Chicks headbands were. Everyone was wearing one; everyone was buying one. I figured I could put my crochet skills to work and come up with a cheaper copycat version.
The headband part works up in less than an hour and is easy enough a beginner could do it.
As for decoration, the sky’s the limit. I looked up crocheted decorations, and found literally hundreds of things I wanted to put on my headband. I went with a standard flower, but there were cute hearts, leaves, animals, swirls, sunbursts, and tons more! I guess if I ever get bored with my flower, I know what to do:)
Abbreviations
For newbies, the code is as follows. Each of these links to a nice Youtube tutorial for your convenience.
dc = double crochet
ch = chain
dc dec = double crochet decrease
Pattern
R1: Ch. 6, dc in 3rd ch from hook and all other ch. Ch 2, turn. (4 dc)
R2: dc in each dc across, dc in ch 2 space. Ch 2, turn. (5 dc)
R3-R13: repeat R2. (16 dc)
R14: dc in each dc across. Ch 2, turn. (16 dc)
R15-R40: repeat R14. (16 dc)
R41: dc dec across 1st 2 dc, dc in each dc across. Ch 2, turn. (15 dc)
R42-R52: repeat R41. (4 dc)
At the end of R52, tie off and weave in the ends.
Using a yarn needle, sew a button on one end of your headband.
Tie both ends of the yarn together to make sure the button is secure, then weave in the ends.
On the opposite end of the headband, use your fingers to open up a hole between the stitches that is large enough for your button to fit through. Slip the button through, and you’re ready to add decoration!
