Depends! If you’re doing the star method like in the picture, you can just pipe right onto the cake. If you want smooth frosting, you’ll need to do a crumb coat and then chill the cake before you do a final coat.

Yes! If you let the buttercream crust, you can wrap the cake and cake board up tightly with plastic wrap, and it will keep.
