DIY Cleaners Especially for Kids | Homan at Home

Do you want to get your children on board with cleaning but are afraid that the commercial cleaning products available in stores are too harmful for them? The only thing you can do is offer a healthier alternative. Check out these DIY cleaning recipes that are safe to use around children.

A note about essential oils: Remember that not all essential oils are good to use around children. If you want to add essential oils to your cleaning products, you might consider using the following: pine, grapefruit, lemon, lavender, spruce and tea tree. If your children are over six, you might also use peppermint essential oil.

  2. 2 teaspoons castile soap

  2. Spray directly on surfaces and wipe down with a cloth.

The reason you want to use a glass bottle is that essential oils may react with plastic. What’s more, it’s important to store the bottle in a dark, cool place because sunlight makes oils oxidize. There are special dark glass bottles sold on markets but if you don’t want the extra cost, just make sure to place the bottle in a dark place and you will be fine.

Ingredients
  1. Spray bottle
  2. 1 cup of rubbing alcohol
  3. 1 cup of water
Instructions
  1. Mix 50% water and 50% rubbing alcohol into a spray bottle and use as a regular cleaner.
  2. Spray onto surfaces and wipe away.

Things you can clean with this disinfectant: bathrooms, cutting boards, points of contact. Use after your all-purpose cleaner. Note that you use a disinfectant to sanitize a surface, rather than to lift grime off of it. Similarly, you use a cleaner to remove dirt rather than to disinfect.

You always want to supervise your kiddos when cleaning, especially if your cleaning products include rubbing alcohol. It can be easily confused with water. While the liquid is safe to touch, it can be a hazard if swallowed.

Ingredients
  1. Bucket
  2. Water
  3. Liquid soap
Instructions
  1. Fill a bucket with warm water, add some liquid soap (you don't want to put too much or the solution will become too soapy) and stir.
  2. Wait for the soap to blend.
  3. Dampen a mop and let your children go over the floor with it.

Lastly, when making these cleaners, keep in mind that they don’t have as long a shelf life as commercial products. They don’t contain stabilizers that will make the cleaner last longer. On that note, it’s best to make enough cleaning solution to last a month or so.

Make cleaning safe for your children by putting together some of these recipes. It’s easy, simple and cost-effective!

A big thank you to DPC Power Cleaners Notting Hill for providing the recipes and information in this article!
