Conversation Heart Shortbread Cookies

Conversation heart candies always look so festive and colorful. Everything else is pink, red, and white, but the conversation heart makers didn’t feel like they had to stop there. No siree! They made the rainbow a Valentines color.

Unpopular opinion:  They also made a candy that tastes pretty nasty.

I do not like conversation hearts, but I do like the way they look on a party table, so I set out to make something cute and colorful – with the catch that it has to taste good too!

Shortbread cutouts are the easiest thing in the world with only three ingredients, so I pulled out my trusty recipe and my Wilton gel colors and set to work.

In the end, I couldn’t figure out how to actually write on the “conversation hearts” – so for now they’re giving us the silent treatment. I’ve read some stuff about cookie stamping that I’d like to try for next time. Have any of you tried it? How did it work for you? Got any tips?

Anyway, these cookies were a hit at the party – cute, eye catching, and yummy.

  • Turn dough out onto floured surface and knead for 1-2 minutes or until smooth and pliable.
  • Split dough into equally sized balls, one for each color you will be using.
  • Color each dough ball.
  • Roll dough to 1/4" on floured surface. Use a cookie cutter to cut out hearts.
  • Place hearts on a greased or lined baking sheet and bake at 300° for 15-20 minutes.

Notes

There are 7 traditional conversation heart colors: white, pink, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple.
I used a mini-heart cutter to make these look more like the originals.

Instructions

For tips on making the shortbread dough, check out this post (you’ll notice I have very few cookie cutters). Usually, I get perfect dough by following the recipe, but for some reason, this time it came out super dry. Like not even dough, just random flakes of butter and flour dry. I added water a tablespoon full at a time until my dough fixed itself. I’m going to blame the weirdness on the weather…

Anyway, once you’ve got your dough, you need to split it into as many balls as colors you’re going to make. After a little internet research, I ended up with 7 roughly equal sized balls – one for each of the standard heart colors (white, pink, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple).

Then you roll each color out. You want these to be a little bit thick, so I rolled them to somewhere between 1/2″ and 1/4″ and used my mini-heart cutter to cut them out and lay them on the baking sheet.

All that’s left is to bake them at 300 for 15-20 minutes, then pile them onto a plate and serve!
