Salt Dough Thumbprint Heart
My little boy was only a few months old when Valentine’s hit, but I decided he would make presents anyway. These cute salt dough hearts were perfect. His little thumbs fit just within the shape, and they make perfect necklace pendants for female relatives and great key chains for the males. These would also be great for Christmas and Mothers’ and Fathers’ Days.
Salt Dough
- 1 cup salt
- 1 cup warm water
- 2 cups flour
- Mix salt and flour. Add water slowly and mix until dough reaches a play-dough consistency. To harden, bake at 250° for 3 hours.
First, mix together all the salt dough ingredients and knead until you have a smooth, play-dough like substance to work with. Then, roll it flat on a floured surface.
Use your cookie cutter to cut hearts, then have the little one press their thumbs into the cut outs. Also cut a hole to use for hanging the heart from a necklace or key chain. Make sure the hole is a little larger than you need as it will shrink slightly during baking.
Bake these for 3 hours on 250°. They’re done when they’re completely hard to the touch. Allow them to cool, then paint! We used Folkart silver enamel, and that looked pretty slick.
